Veggie Garden Classes

2008 Spring Garden Classes 10:00-1:00  $36 per class…

Registration available on Internet or by Phone 303-679-9921

Saturday March 29th 1st Seed Starting
Get a jump start on Tomatoes, Pumpkins, Eggplants, Peppers, and I can think of many more. The seeds we choose for this class are what I will call two stage, as they’ll need another transplant before they go directly in the garden. We’ll also be planting companion plants like calendula, basil, and marigolds. (*details on seed and flats below)

Saturday April 26th 2nd Seed Starting
This class will be identical to the first in methods; we’ll just be starting different seeds. These will be cooler season seeds that can be transplanted directly outdoors such as broccoli, cabbage, and brusselsprouts to name a few. *

Saturday May 10th Preparing, Planning & Transplanting
From large outdoor gardens to gardening in containers; Be prepared to get dirty! This is class is all about the dirt, what you’ve got, and what you need, soil amendments, and bagged soils; Composting, the good, the bad…and the down right ugly; transplanting those tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, and seedlings from the March 29th class into one gallon size pots. Seed ‘starter’ is good stuff but now your plants need more growing room as well as growing soil.

Saturday May 31st Planting and Transplanting         A full day in the gardens!

Hands and knees required! From seed sowing directly outdoors to transplanting what we’ve already started. Be prepared to get wet and muddy! Brings your starts and at least one container, (if you are planning container gardens), if you’re planting directly into your own prepared gardens, you’ll transplant some of our starts, just to get the hang of it. Everyone will get to sew some seeds as well. We’ll take an hour and a half break, and then all are welcome to spend the rest of the day with us as we plant. We’ll be happy to do a ‘pot luck’ lunch, depending on what the majority of students want. Tell me on your registration in the ‘comment’ box.  Choose “class only” or “all day plus lunch” on the registration.

July 19th, Fertility and Pests “Organically”
Learn the when and whys of organic fertilizers, timing IS everything! We’re fortunate up here not to have too many pests to deal with, but there’s alway a few. If you grow in green houses or close quarters you’ll have more to deal with. Learn a few organic tricks, and companion planting techniques that will minimize pests issues and maximize your organic fertility.

August 16th, Finishing, Crop Extenders and First Harvest
Seems like we’re in a hurry this time of year, “When will the frosts come?” How am I going to ripen all these green tomatoes?

September 13th Harvest Celebration, Free to students, 11 a.m. through 4 p.m.
Details on this part to come, but expect a great day in the gardens with lots to eat!
